Haircut

So, I’ve been on this hair kick lately and finally decided to go hack off my long locks. At the recommendation of a friend and a couple of reviews on Citysearch I went over to Adore. Can I just say: yes. Cool, laid back, and folks who really know their stuff. Brenton Anderson gave me a fantastic cut: he was clearly expert in his approach; he moved around my head with confidence and a certain sense of joy; like this is something he really loves doing with his life. So many stylists are so grotesquely surly or just plain unwilling to listen to your wants. I’ll definitely be coming back. . .

Terrific Look

I deeply dig this whole look; from the haircut to the belt to the boots. Totally excellent.

I Heart NY

Some selections from overheard in new york:
Disoriented stranger to random businessman: Excuse me, can you tell me where I can find the bus to New York?
Random businessman: This is New York.
Disoriented stranger: This is?!
Random businessman: Yeah, you’re in New York.
Disoriented stranger: Ooh! Really?! Oh, now I see!
–5th Ave & 48th St
Indignant woman in crowded elevator: You’re standing on my foot!
Man: What are feet for?
–168th St Subway Elevator
Boyfriend: I’ve got it. A giant human hamster ball.
Girlfriend: You are not putting our daughter in a hamster ball to keep her away from weird men.
Boyfriend: But you have to admit it’s better than the idea of a leash or the electric fence.
–81st & York
Guy #1: Wow, The Hipster Handbook finally made it to the stoop sale.
Guy #2: I think we’re witnessing the death of irony.
–Stoop Sale in Brooklyn
Three-year-old girl, pointing to a page in Eric Carle’s The Mixed-Up Chameleon: Why does he have an umbrella?
Dad: Some people have to wear umbrellas all the time, otherwise they’ll get lots of freckles or end up with squamous cell carcinoma and die.
–B Train
And my absolute favorite:
Starbucks barista (giving out some samples): Hey, would you like to sample our frappuccino?
Man with a bottle in a brown paper bag: Pssh. Nah. That shit don’t go good with Hennessy.
Starbucks barista: Oh, okay. Have a good day.
Man with a bottle in a brown paper bag: Wait, sorry. That was fucked up. Do you wanna sample my Hennessy?

The Art of the Public Service Announcement

So apparently in New Zealand public service announcements are meant to terrorize you into behaving properly. And yet there is a kind of finesse involved. A little violence, a little humour, good light, artful camera angles, touch of macabre. Somehow it works.

Neurons Observed "Remembering"

A very exciting piece of evidence for how memory works.

“The new study, experts said, has all but closed the case: For the brain, remembering is a lot like doing. . .”

A Peaceful Trend

I just purchased this lovely scarf from A Peace Treaty.
You should absolutely check them out. The scarves were the idea of two women, one a Pakastani Muslim, the other a Libyan Jew, who wanted to  support ancient Middle Eastern crafts as well as support artists working in places of socio-political strife. You can read their entire story here. The whole scarf thing in general is a trend that I hope sticks, especially if people make them with similar intention as A Peace Treaty. I love the aesthetic (just please, don’t wear a keffiyeh unless you are Palestinian– even if you support their cause).
